AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity can suggest destinations, build a day-by-day plan and write your packing list in minutes. But AI has never stood on a mountain top or eaten at a restaurant, and it can invent places that don't exist. Here are ten tips for better answers, six warnings you should know about, and how we use AI in Travel Outenza ourselves.

Planning a trip with AI at the breakfast table.
In short
Use AI for: ideas, day-by-day itineraries, budget drafts, packing lists and understanding local customs.
Don't blindly trust AI on: prices, opening hours, entry requirements, safety in nature and small, local places.
The best trip: AI gives you a draft. Recommendations from people who have been there, and your own experiences, make the trip real.
Before you pay: check that the place exists, that it's open, and that the price matches with whoever sells the trip.
What AI is good and bad at when you travel
Task
How good is AI?
Why
Destination ideas
Very good
It knows thousands of places and can match them to what you want
Day-by-day itinerary
Very good
It's quick at putting places together and grouping them
Packing list and preparation
Very good
Lists and structure are a strength
Culture, customs and language
Good
General knowledge changes little
Budget
Medium
Gives a useful estimate, but prices may be outdated
Prices, opening hours and tickets
Weak
They change often, and AI may use old information
Visas and entry requirements
Weak
A mistake here can stop the whole trip
Small, local places
Weak
The less known the place, the higher the risk that AI makes things up
10 tips: how to get the most out of AI when you travel
1. Give the framework first
The more the AI knows, the better the suggestions. Tell it how many days you have, your budget, who is travelling and what you like and dislike. Need a starting point? Have a look at where to travel in 2027 or the cheapest countries to vacation in.
We are two adults travelling in [month] for [number] days. The budget is around [amount] euros per person, excluding flights. We like [food, hiking, culture] and want to avoid [big crowds, long drives]. Suggest five destinations and briefly explain why each one fits.
2. Ask for reasons, not just lists
A list of 20 places doesn't help much. Ask why a place suits you in particular. That makes it easier to choose, and you'll notice sooner if the AI has misunderstood.
3. Use AI to organise, not just to find
AI is good at sorting. Give it the places you already want to visit and ask it to make a plan where the places are grouped by area. Need help with the plan itself? We have a separate guide on how to create a travel itinerary.
Here are the places I want to visit in [city]: [list]. Make a plan for [number] days where places close to each other are on the same day. Include one relaxed afternoon.
4. Let AI compare options
Not sure where to stay, or whether to take the train or fly? Ask the AI to list the pros and cons.
Compare three areas to stay in [city] for [a couple, a family with children, a group of friends]. Give the pros and cons of each area.
5. Ask the AI to say when it's unsure
Say it plainly: "Only include places you are sure exist, and tell me if you're unsure." It's no guarantee, but it makes the AI more careful.
6. Choose a tool that shows its sources
Many AI tools can search the web and link to their sources. That way you can click through and check for yourself, instead of trusting an answer with no source.
7. Use AI for the preparation you'd otherwise forget
Packing lists, useful phrases in the local language, customs around tipping and dress codes, and what to download before you leave. These are tasks where AI rarely gets things seriously wrong.
What should I know about tipping, dress codes and etiquette in [country]? What do tourists often get wrong?
8. Make a plan B
Ask for ideas for rainy days, closed attractions or delayed flights. It takes a minute and can save a whole day.
What can we do in [city] if it rains all day? Give five indoor ideas.
9. Get help when you're travelling as a group
AI can suggest a plan where everyone in the group gets something they want. Use the suggestion as a starting point for the discussion, not as the final answer.
We are [number] friends with different wishes: [list]. Make a plan where everyone gets at least one activity they want, and suggest what we should vote on.
10. Let AI check your plan
Paste in your itinerary and ask the AI to find weak spots: days that are too long, too little time between activities, or places that are often closed on certain days. Then check the points it finds yourself.
6 warnings: where AI can lead you astray

1. AI can invent places
AI tools write answers that sound right, even when they aren't. In Peru, tourists were sent to a "sacred canyon" that doesn't exist. The less known a place is, the higher the risk. Always look the place up on a map, and check for recent photos and reviews.
2. Prices and opening hours may be outdated
The AI doesn't always know that an attraction has new opening hours, that a restaurant has closed or that the price has gone up. Check the place's own website, and check the price with whoever sells the ticket or the room.
3. Check visas and entry rules with the authorities
A mistake about visas, passports or entry forms can stop your trip at the airport. Only use official government websites, even if the AI sounds certain.
4. AI doesn't know the mountain, the weather or the trail conditions
In August 2026, three hikers had to be rescued from the Mount Shasta volcano in California after planning the trip with Gemini. They brought too little food and water and got lost in the dark on the way down. Use local sources, weather forecasts and local advice for every trip into nature.
5. Not all suggestions are neutral
Some AI services show ads or partner with booking sites. That means the first suggestion isn't necessarily the best or the cheapest. Always compare before you book, and remember that the booking and payment happen with the booking site. If you have a problem with your booking, they are the ones you contact, not the AI.
6. Everyone gets the same suggestions
Ask AI for the best places in a city and you'll often get the same places as everyone else. That means long queues and a trip that looks like everybody else's. The best experiences often come from people who have been there: a friend, a local or another traveller sharing their favourite places. For ideas beyond the usual lists, read our guides to unique things to do in Thailand and unusual things to do in London.
One more thing about privacy: never type your passport number, card number or passwords into an AI chat. That kind of information belongs only in the booking site's own payment window.
Check an AI suggestion in two minutes
Does the place exist? Look it up on a map, and check for photos and reviews from the last few months.
Is it open when you arrive? Check the season, weekdays and opening hours on the place's own website.
Is the price right? Check the price with whoever sells the trip.
Do you need to book? Many popular places have quotas and fixed entry times. You'll find more examples in our article on 25 countries with free nature.
Is the travel time realistic? Check distances and public transport in a map app.
Has someone you trust been there? A recommendation from a real traveller is worth more than ten AI suggestions.

How we use AI in Travel Outenza
How to improve the description of a saved place with AI in Travel Outenza.
We use AI ourselves, but only where it makes the trip easier for you:
The texts on Saved cards. When you save a place, AI writes a short description, so you remember what the place is and why you saved it.
The travel diary. AI creates the diary from your trip, so you get a summary of the trip without having to write it all yourself.
What AI can't do is travel for you. The places you save, the recommendations you get from other travellers and the trips you actually take are what make travel real. AI helps with the practical side, but it's the people and the experiences that make the trip worth remembering.
From travel diary to travel story and social media posts in Travel Outenza.
From AI suggestion to finished trip
A conversation with AI quickly disappears in your chat history. Once you've got suggestions you like, you can collect them in Travel Outenza:
Save the places and see them on the map. That way you also see that they exist.
Add them to the day-by-day itinerary, so you can see if the days get too full.
Yes, for planning. AI is good at ideas, itineraries, budget drafts and packing lists. But it can be wrong about prices, opening hours and entry requirements, so check anything that costs money or could stop your trip.
Can AI book my trip for me?
Some AI services partner with booking sites and can help you find and compare flights and hotels. The booking and payment itself almost always happen with the airline, the hotel or the booking site, and they are the ones you contact if something goes wrong.
Which AI tool is best for travel planning?
ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity are all good for ideas and itineraries. Choose a tool that can search the web and show sources, so you can check the information.
Can AI be wrong about destinations?
Yes. AI tools have sent tourists to places that don't exist and given advice that has led to mountain rescues. Check that the place exists on a map, that it's open, and that safety advice comes from local or official sources.
Does Travel Outenza use AI?
Yes. AI writes the texts on Saved cards and creates your travel diary, to make it easier to plan and remember your trip. The recommendations and trips in the app come from real travellers.
Is it safe to share my travel plans with AI?
General plans are fine to share. Never type your passport number, card number or passwords into the chat.
